A quiet renovation of a detached cottage where the architecture recedes and the wild garden takes the lead. Intended for long-term rental, the design is simple, warm and adaptable for future residents. A place for others to inhabit and make their own. The design is unpretentious and unadorned: pared-back, ordered, and calm.
A complete reorientation of the kitchen, along with an extended window to the courtyard, redefines the central living space. The tired and dated kitchen, bathroom and laundry were carefully reworked using simple, honest materials that are tactile and imperfect. Stainless steel, hand-painted joinery, handmade Moroccan tiles that will also wear and patina gracefully over time. New large-scale joinery provides generous storage not only in the bedroom but also in the adjoining living and study spaces, quietly linking the zones while maintaining a sense of separation and threshold. This is a beautifully modest design resulting in a timeless home. A collaboration with Molonglo and vintage collector Ken Neale. |
